In Lunatic they appear in turn 7.

Strategy:
Firstly, in this map use flying units, Mages and other classes that aren't Knights/Generals or mounted units, because these ones move really slow through the sand, and you have to move quickly if you don't want to lose some units because Astram (don't kill him, he could switch sides later...). Change your units to flying ones if you can and use a Thief and open the chests; when you start the chapter, send a Thief to them (however you can let the enemies get the chests and then kill them). Send the remaining units to the castle.

It's really necessary to put the correct units in the correct positions before start to complete it quickly. If you do this, you won't have any troubles during the chapter, obviously don't approach too much to the Mages, attract some of them and defeat them, and be careful about the Sages next to Yodel, they have a long-ranged magic (10 squares around them) and is strong, so attack and recover immediately with staffs.
If you have Pure Waters or Barrier staff (both increase magic Resistance), use it in your best aerial unit to send him/her to attack the enemies next to the boss. You can use Etzel to do this too, due to the enemies that don't deal much damage to him.

To recruit Etzel talk to him with Marth. It's easy by putting someone with good Resistance in his attack range to attract him, after defeating the enemies around him. After talking to him, send Marth to the village, but if you don't want Astram bothers you, use the Rescue staff (being next to the castle) when he visits the village.

Finally, buy some Pure Waters and powerful magic tomes, they will be useful later. But if you don't have Wendell alive, BUY PURE WATERS NOW. You could train in the Arena... which is below the Shop [1], it's like the fights in the preparations but betting money.
